Have been drinking Manhattan Special since I was a little kid sitting in myuncle's pizzaria on E. Tremont Road, Bronx. Being out of the country without itfor 4 years was tough and one of the best parts of moving back to NYC(Brooklyn!) has been a steady supply of Manhattan Special--my grocery storestocks about 4 shelves of the stuff. Tried the sugar-free for the firt timetoday-- amazingly one of the only sodas that sugar free tastes just as good asthe original. Manhattan Special makes me happy. Cheers!

In July, 1976, I started working in a neighborhood Italian Deli in the Bronx (Cold Cut City, Allerton Ave, remember it?). It was there I was introduced to the best soda in the world. It helped us get through the long summer days and nights. Five years later I graduated from college and moved to CT. Since then, whenever I visit the Bronx, I make sure to bring some home. The last time was just yesterday, and I emptied a local grocery store of all he had. Thanks for such a great product. Hello, lately my Son has had a sore throat. I had gone to the supermarket and found some special herbal tea for him. It was a combination of licorice and slippery elm root. It is delicious and works too. I make a big potfull and its even better when it cools. I use honey to sweeten it and find that the flavor is added this way. Also to coat the throat. Anywat, the thought came to mind how excellant it would be to have a carbonated drink like this. Then I thought to myself. And thought of the Manhattan Special people because of there quality of products. Hey my Family came from Brooklyn. I feel connected in some way. Maybe its because I have always enjoyed your espesso soda so much. Sometimes I just have to have it! Especially with a salami and provalone sandwich. So is there a reason why no one has ever made anise flavored soda? Would be great to hear from you. D. Galati wrote on December 21, 2002 at 3:32 pm:
I grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brookyn, and lived there for 27 years before moving to to FL. EVERY day coming home from work off the D train in the Bay station I'd go right into Bagels R Us under the tressel right across the street and get a hot dozen bagels and a big bottle of MS. I don't even think they HAD sugar free back then! This is the first I'm hearing about it! My dad used to drink it all the time when we went to Joe's to get the panelles and boy, nothing else goes with a pannelle but an MS. I still remember how my dad would savor the MS in those little bottles, and I'm the only one in my family who followed suit and fell in love with the taste instantly. It is SOOOO addictive, but the dad started putting on a few pounds and mom blamed it on the MS and the sugar. Yeah, right mom, it couldn't be that dad was sucking down a foot long hero every time he opened a bottle LOL back then we counted calories, not fat grams! I can't WAIT to try the sugar free MS and I'm tired of trying to find a little deli here and there in Florida that carries it. I know of only one, but it's quite a drive and MS is something I want to see in my local store right next to those Goya sodas that somehow the stores cater to in the "ethnic" sections of the supermarkets. How come the MS isn't next to the Stello D'oro rack?? Let me know when MS is available online to order by the cases. This way I don't have to hunt down what the stores down here that call themselves Italian keep forgetting goes with a hero. But then again, what they call a hero/sub down here with the crappy bread the have the nerve to call Italian bread deserves to go with a Coke. I'll worry about that later, just get the MS's online and I'll worry about the fatty prosciutto and cappicola later. D. Galati can also be reached at: stargazor@hotmail.com

Growing up in Brooklyn most of my life there were certain things you could count on, like Nathan's fries and Manhattan special soda. Having moved out to California four years ago left me missing my roots, but also my beloved soda. I recently searched for my dark bean passion on-line and low and behold stumbled upon the web site. I couldn't be happier. Now, not only do I have my dark elixir, but I can have it without sugar as well and shipped right to my door. Air fare is too expensive to be running back and forth three thousand miles lugging the bottles. Well it almost feels like home now. I am still working on how to get the Nathan's fries shipped while they're still hot. Thanks for all of the sweet memories, Denise McCarthy Denise mcCarthy can also be reached at: djm2664825@aol.com
